Welcome to Show and Tell!
Show and Tell is our new story-telling series about the wonders that friends of Double Double have acquired over the years.
The first instalment of Show and Tell is presented by Maple’s Austin McMahon. Austin founded Maple in 2014. He’s a self-taught designer and an all-round cool dude. Inspired by the teals and blues of Vancouver Bay, Maple construct their unique pieces utilising inherited craftsmanship techniques combined with robust and durable materials.
In this month’s Show and Tell, Austin talks us through a bunch of his favourite things — from sentimental heirlooms to slick shades.
What’s something people wouldn’t know about the item just by looking at it?
There are pieces of baggage tags from the late 70s that are still attached to the handle.
Why is it special?
This was my father’s carry-on suitcase when he and my mother travelled Europe in the late 1970s.
How did the object come into your possession?
I found it in my parent’s basement when I was about 19 or 20. I believe I took this suitcase with me on a trip to Mexico about 15 years ago and never gave it back 😂.
What’s your favourite detail about it?
That it was my father’s and that it still has old luggage tags on it.
When did you acquire it, and what else was happening in your life at the time?
I think I acquired it when I was about 19-or-so. I had come back from living in Hawaii for a few months and used it on quick trips here and there.
What’s something that people wouldn’t know about the item just by looking at it?
This was my first ‘nice’ watch. It’s a 1982 Rolex Datejust on a jubilee bracelet.
Why is it special?
I bought this watch when I first started to make enough money off of MAPLE to live. I had paid off all my debts and decided to treat myself to a vintage watch and a 1990 BMW E30 cabriolet.
How did the object come into your possession?
I found this watch on Craigslist in a town outside Vancouver. This was pre-Rolex price skyrocketing — probably late 2018, if I remember correctly.
What’s your favourite detail about it?
I love the jubilee bracelet…I always wanted that particular bracelet on a watch.
When did you acquire it, and what else was happening in your life at the time?
I acquired this watch when I was fully out of debt and my company was profitable. I didn’t have to work two jobs anymore — exciting times!
What’s something people wouldn’t know about the item just by looking at it?
The head on this mug sways back and forth.
Why is it special?
I just love how unique it is. I had never seen anything like it when I bought it.
How did the object come into your possession?
I bought it from HAVEN about 12-14 years ago.
What’s your favourite detail about it?
The quote on the back that says “never put off tomorrow what you can do today”.
When did you acquire it, and what else was happening in your life at the time?
It’s hard to remember specifics when things start to get that old, but I was working for HAVEN at the time and learning the ropes of the fashion world.
What’s something people wouldn’t know about the item just by looking at it?
I use these more for work than DJing, LOL.
Why is it special?
They’re just great headphones.
How did the object come into your possession?
I was talking with my friend Derek from Pacific Rhythm and he told me that these were the industry standard at the time. My last pair of headphones had broken so I picked up a pair of these Sennheiser’s.
What’s your favourite detail about it?
I like the design and shape of them. They aren’t massive headphones that cover your whole ear like most DJ headphones from the early 2000s/2010s.
When did you acquire them, and what else was happening in your life at the time?
Probably around 2017. I was newer to Vancouver around then, I had moved there in 2015.
What’s something people wouldn’t know about the item just by looking at it?
These things were not cheap!
Why is it special?
They fit perfectly.
How did the object come into your possession?
I bought these a few months ago on a trip to NYC.
What’s your favourite detail about it?
I love the silver details on the frames and temples.
When did you acquire them, and what else was happening in your life at the time?
I was on a trip with my girlfriend and we were shopping around Soho. We stumbled into a stored that housed new and vintage glasses. I tried these Jaques Marie Mage glasses on and the rest was history! I love this brand and I definitely want more pieces.
