Welcome to Show and Tell!
Show and Tell is our story-telling series about the wonders that friends of Double Double have acquired over the years.
This month’s instalment of Show and Tell is presented by Jasmine Dowling — the Meanjin-based artist, photographer, graphic designer and content creator behind Studio Jasmine. Jasmine’s portfolio is nothing short of impressive, with a collection of work for (what seems like) every dream client under the sun! Her body of work comprises creative direction, styling, design, photography and videography for clients like Maison Balzac, Mecca Beauty, Diptyque, Byredo & Hermes.
Jasmine takes a deep dive into her wardrobe and home garnishments to talk us through a very special episode of Show and Tell.
What’s something people wouldn’t know about the item just by looking at it?
If there were a fire then this would be the only piece of clothing that I’d save.
Why is it special?
I was in New York after having just finished my uni degree, and walking out of the subway was this ‘off-duty-model’-type wearing this Acne jacket but in a different colour. I remember thinking to myself, “if this isn’t all a fluke and I’m able to continue working for myself, then I’ll buy myself one of these jackets” — it wasn’t and I did 😊.
How did the object come into your possession?
I bought it in Acne Studios in Le Marais.
What’s your favourite detail about it?
Its softness, it felt like butter from day one and only gets better with age.
When did you acquire it, and what else was happening in your life at the time?
It was on a trip to Paris in 2016 when I was going through a few copyright infringement cases against large retailers – I felt I deserved a treat.
What’s something people wouldn’t know about the item just by looking at it?
That it cost me $2.
Why is it special?
Out of the thousands of books at Bookfest, this is the one I found.
How did the object come into your possession?
I was at Lifeline Bookfest flicking through the tables and tables of books when I saw ‘My struggle to Become a Person’, and thought that if nothing else, it was a funny title.
What’s your favourite detail about it?
It looks and smells like it’s had a lot of life.
When did you acquire it, and what else was happening in your life at the time?
I want to say that it was 2019. The mental toll of working for myself had really started to kick in at this time.
What’s something people wouldn’t know about the item just by looking at it?
It’s double sided, so you’re either showing the snake or the lion.
Why is it special?
It was probably one of my first ‘adult’ solid gold jewellery purchases.
How did the object come into your possession?
I had been eyeing it off online for ages and it ended up going on sale, so I checked out right away.
What’s your favourite detail about it?
You might say that I’m a classic Leo, but the combination of the lion and the snake just feels right.
When did you acquire it, and what else was happening in your life at the time?
It was 2019, and I was blissfully unaware of the chaos to come.
What’s something people wouldn’t know about the item just by looking at it?
It was designed in 1938 by Paavo Pineal.
Why is it special?
I’m so picky that it’s the only lamp I’ve like enough since moving into this house in 2018.
How did the object come into your possession?
I spotted it in an apartment in the TV show, ‘Master of None’, and became so obsessed with it that I couldn’t rest until I found out exactly what lamp it was.
What’s your favourite detail about it?
The combination of brass and wicker.
When did you acquire it, and what else was happening in your life at the time?
I bought it last year when we were a year into trying (and failing) to buy a house. I think I was really over putting off expensive house purchases “until we buy a house”.
What’s something people wouldn’t know about the item just by looking at it?
It’s a vintage Gucci watch.
Why is it special?
It feels like me in watch form.
How did the object come into your possession?
I hunted it down online until I found a seller that had good paperwork and the colour bezels that I was after.
What’s your favourite detail about it?
I love that you can change out the bezels to be any colour. It’s like you’re wearing a new watch every time.
When did you acquire it, and what else was happening in your life at the time?
I made this purchase at the start of the year when I had officially worked for myself for nine years.
