Carhartt WIP and Converse have long recognized in each other a kindred dedication to history, iconic heritage, and adoption by subcultures across the world. Their long list of collaborations reflects this, with shoes evincing mutual appreciation, pushing the novel without sacrificing history.
This latest collaboration sees Carhartt WIP apply the label’s favourite military and workwear references to the classic Converse All Star Chuck Taylor ’70 for the first time. The result speaks to the commitment to craftspersonship and a utilitarian ethos that has long underpinned both labels’ approach to design.
This Carhartt WIP reimagining of the Chuck Taylor All Star ’70 pays homage to a fabric and colour that has become emblematic of Carhartt WIP and its Midwestern US workwear heritage: heavyweight, durable, 12 oz cotton canvas in the label’s trademark “Hamilton Brown” colourway. This shoe also features an OrthoLite insole for all-day comfort; the woven Carhartt WIP “C” label on the tongue; and a special edition Converse All-Star patch on the ankle in Carhartt WIP colours. Of course, this shoe also boasts the range of features for which the Chuck Taylor ’70 has become known including 1970 custom eyelets, higher rubber foxing, and, perhaps most importantly, the feature that made it most appealing to the basketball players of the 1970s and swarms of subcultural misfits since: a thick, cushioned sole.
