Within the Comme des Garçons family, as its name implies, the Homme line might be characterized as the PLAY range’s more serious older brother. Though undoubtedly situating themselves in the long history of formal menswear, the Homme range is a far cry from uninspired office attire. Rather, the Homme line seeks to make playful interventions into the conventions of middle-class menswear, particularly when it comes to classic silhouettes such as the shirt and cardigan. Conversely, they often add formal touches to more casual streetwear staples such as hoodies and tees, locating themselves in a liminal space between the formal and the informal, the event and the street.
In recent collections, the label has looked from Paris across the British channel to England, taking inspiration from the palettes of the British countryside’s woodlands, the tartan patterns of the Scottish highlands, and homely patchwork traditions. That thread remains in this latest collection, but in no way limits the label’s experimentation. Particularly striking is the use of panels that form both colour and texture contrasts, amongst them glimpses of wool plaid, ballistic khaki nylon, and silky cupro. Such paneling is often said to operate within the language of deconstruction, but the creations of Comme des Garçon Homme, however, appear more palimpsestic, alluding to the hidden histories of menswear.
The Comme des Garçons Homme Multi Material Striped Shirt continues the label’s longstanding obsession with obscuring the formality of shirting with military-influenced elements. While military references in the world of streetwear are common, Comme des Garçons Homme are the only label to reconfigure the button-up with military-inspired highlights in such inventive ways.
The cotton poplin body of this shirt is complemented by khaki green highlights: the collar and cuffs cut from a cotton-poly blend twill; and nylon panels down the front on either side of the button closure. A single patch pocket on the chest laid across the different panels highlights the energetic contrast created between them. This regular-fit shirt also features button-fastened cuffs and a shirt hem with contrast stitching.
