It is often the case that the most forward-thinking designs in fashion—as in other art forms—are not completely novel, but pull and push past shapes, styles, and apparatuses In the service of something at once familiar and groundbreaking. Such is the approach of sought-after British designer Kim Jones. The Dior menswear designer comes adds to a run of coveted sneaker collaborations with the Chuck 70 Utility Wave Hi.
Jones’ reimagining of the classic Chuck Taylor 70 doesn’t try to break the sneaker down with familiar deconstructive gestures. Rather, the Chuck 70 Utility Wave Hi suggests the generative potential of acts of preservation. Jones plays on the iconic and timeless status of the Chuck Taylor 70’ with a transparent TPU panel integrated into the show, running from the quarter panel and around the heel, literally extending the lifespan of each shoe with this protective shield. Here in the black colourway, the Chuck 70 Utility Wave Hi also features wavy, extended foxing; cotton canvas upper; and a thick cushioned sole.
