In 2021, N. Hoolywood celebrates its 20th anniversary. In anticipation, the label is reissuing select classic pieces from their archive. With each garment updated using the label’s most recent design innovations and contemporary materials, these pieces come together to form a new collection celebrating N. Hoolywood’s future legacy for the world of avant-garde menswear.
Daisuke Obana’s menswear designs with N. Hoolywood, which often humorously tug at our accepted notions of formality without explicitly rejecting them, reveal an engagement with the early 20th-century social conditions in which modern men’s clothing norms were forged. The label’s oversized ‘Big Shirts’ have been essential to this project. Blowing out the formal dimensions of the business shirt and approaching outerwear in shape and function, this long-running series of pieces test the often ambiguous boundaries that distinguish one type of garment from another.
Constructed from two pieces of fabric of different lengths, the N. Hoolywood Asymmetrical Pleat Shirt challenges ideas of neatness and symmetry as essential to the concept of formality. The right side of the button placket is adorned with intricate pleat detailing. Not only does this element emphasize the piece’s asymmetry at the level of visual register, but also conceptually; by using a detail normally associated with formalwear, the piece highlightss the conceptual gap between this curiously lopsided garment and the formal and business attire that it playfully references. At the back vertical center seam, the two pieces of fabric are brought together with an exposed overlocked hem celebrating the point of convergence.
Drop shoulders and an oversized collar give the Asymmetrical Pleat Shirt an exaggerated appearance, softened by its rounded silhouette. Cut from a heavy poly-rayon blend with a unique drape, this oversized shirt also features a curved shirt hem and front button closure.
