In 2021, N. Hoolywood celebrates its 20th anniversary. In anticipation, the label is reissuing select classic pieces from their catalogue. With each piece updated using the label’s most recent design innovations and contemporary materials, these pieces come together to form a new collection celebrating N. Hoolywood’s future legacy for the world of avant-garde menswear.
Daisuke Obana’s menswear designs with N. Hoolywood, which often humorously tug at our accepted notions of formality without explicitly rejecting them, reveal an engagement with the early 20th century social conditions in which modern men’s clothing norms were forged. With the Panel Button Up Shirt, Obana takes aim at the piece of upward mobility clothing par excellence. The Panel Button Up Shirt is a result of this impulse to deconstruct garments whose history otherwise gets lost. With it, Obana deconstructs the shirt, literally undressing it with panel detailing that makes evident a tongue-in-cheek reference to punk patchwork traditions.
Cut from two cotton-Tencel-blend fabrics conceived of specifically for this reinvention of an N. Hoolywood classic, the Panelled Shirt in the Blue Stripe colourway features a formal, slim neckline and crisp collar; front button closure; curved hem; panel-detailed drop shoulder; and panel detailing at the sides and bottom hem. With equal parts playful jabs at British manners and staggering attention-to-detail, N. Hoolywood push the shirt to its limits.
