Not usually one for thematic collections, like everyone else, in 2020 N Hoolywood founder and head designer Daisuke Obana found the rhythm of his life interrupted. While confined under lockdown, Obana became fascinated with the US Space Command’s decision to send two astronauts to the International Space Station in the midst of the biggest global health crisis in a century. Captivated by the possibility of imagining beyond the pandemic-induced claustrophobia and isolation, the resulting collection bears the marks of a visionary designer looking forward.
True to form, on his cosmic forays Obana steered clear of literal interpretation of his chosen theme. Instead—with his trademark eye for formal innovation—the designer sought to allude to interplanetary travel more obliquely through highly considered use of new materials and space-inspired details. Lockdown also provided Obana with ample time to reflect on his past work, excavating from his archives the designs he deemed most fundamental for the world as it is today. In doing so, Obana puts the past in dialogue with the present while imagining future possibilities.
N Hoolywood’s Test Product Exchange Service is the label’s military-inspired line, created in appreciation of military wear’s unmatched functionality. Military wear intended for use in unforgiving environments provides Daisuke Obana with a unique template for his experiments in form. This season, the Test Product Exchange Service range is the main vehicle for the collection’s cosmic influences, conveyed via play between form and materials.
On first glance, the N Hoolywood Reversible Denim Hat may not proclaim any direct military influences. It is, however, modelled on the M-37 hat worn by the US Army in the 20th-century, though with a deeper fit for added comfort. Constructed from rigid indigo denim backed with black nylon ripstop, this reversible hat offers two entirely distinct headwear options in one.
