Legendary Californian shoemaker Vans created the Vans Vault in 2003, an initiative dedicated to collaborations with designers and artists at the vanguard of contemporary streetwear and culture. The effort made to foster trans-pacific collaborations has been particularly evident. Over the years, Undercover’s Jun Takahashi and artist Taka Hayashi have taken classic vans shapes as their canvas.
For this latest collaboration with Japanese streetwear icons Neighborhood, Vans continues this tradition. Yet with the recruitment of Mister Cartoon, one of LA’s most legendary tattoo artists, the result is a staunchly West Coast affair, a chance for Neighborhood to pay homage to a culture that has greatly influenced them over the years.
Named ‘Uncle Toons Mart’ after a fictional liquor store imagined by Mister Cartoon and Neighborhood, the concept behind this collaboration with sounds like something out of Grand Theft Auto. This is no coincidence. Mister Cartoon’s art was featured widely in the cult game series. It’s impossible to mention Los Angeles street culture without mention of Mister Cartoon.
Crafted from premium suede, the UA Old Skool 36DX is a stylishly understated all-black shoe featuring tonal embroidery at the toe and heel referencing ‘Uncle Toon’s Mart’ and the home cities of the two collaborators: Los Angeles and Tokyo, all in Mister Cartoon’s trademark West Coast tattoo style. Other features include black heel plaque, classic Vans vulcanized midsole, gum rubber outsole, leather overlays, and high foxing tape.
