LA-based label Pleasures have had a penchant for iconoclasm from the beginning; early collections featured caps emblazoned with ‘RIP Morrissey’ and a t-shirt with Kurt Cobain’s suicide note printed on the front. Such pieces were often perceived as tasteless, opportunistic stunts. Yet since its 2015 beginnings, the label has further complicated the picture. Though still fond of provocation, Pleasures’s subversive impulses are softened by a genuine reverence for the sub-cultures from which they take inspiration. Nowhere is that clearer than in their long list of collaborations.
The Pleasures x Dr. Martens 1460 Remastered is, for Pleasures, a milestone in their collaborative lineage. For Dr. Martens, it is part of the ongoing Remastered series. This year, the British shoemaker lends their classic boot to 12 of the world’s most innovative designers in celebration of its 60th anniversary.
Given the importance of the 1460 boot to New Wave and Punk subcultures dating back to the 1970s, and these scenes’ influence on Pleasures founders Alex James and Vlad Elkin, the label sought to pay homage to these often conflicting musical subcultures while maintaining their own brazen approach. The result is a striking all-black boot that achieves its goal through a two-material construction: smooth leather and patent leather. Uniting these two materials, in reference to Punk and New Wave respectively, Pleasures also create a subtle form of two-tone, itself a reference to the Ska movements of 1960s Britain that became closely aligned with the burgeoning punk scene.
Other features of this 8-eye ankle boot include all the features of Dr. Martens Originals: grooved sides, woven ‘Bouncing Soles’ loop label at the heel, and yellow stitching. Constructed with the Goodyear welt technique, the 1460 remastered boot features Dr. Martens’s iconic AirWair™ sole.
