Luxury sportswear tends not to aspire to performance. In fact, the simultaneous affirmation of a sportswear aesthetic and denial of performance is often how luxury brands have distinguished themselves from the rest of the field. This is what makes Stone Island such a welcome outlier. The Italian label has gained a reputation not just for employing performance, but for redefining it, with experimental research fabrics intended to enhance pieces in function and aesthetic. In their latest collection, the luxury sportswear experimentalists explore the unique textures of new and classic materials developed in-house, drawing from each a unique tonal range through a combination of their trademark dyeing processes.
Emphasizing the label’s quality materials, hooded sweatshirts have long been a staple for the innovative Italian label. Pieces such as the Dust Colour Hooded Sweat stand as a testament to how, from wardrobe basics, the Stone Island treatment creates showcases for the label’s experimental dyeing and manufacture practices. The perfect canvas for the demonstration of one of Stone Island’s most alluring seasonal colour experiments, the Dust Colour Hooded Sweat is constructed from soft cotton fleece dyed using the label’s ‘Dust Colour Treatment,’ a thin layer of pigment applied to the finished garment. Combined with the melange cotton fleece fabric, this achieves a uniquely differentiated surface, emitting a luster usually restricted to synthetic materials.
Here in the classic ‘melange orange’ colourway, this hooded sweatshirt features ribbed cuffs and bottom hem; a kangaroo pouch pocket at the front with hidden zip closure at each side; ribbed panels at the shoulders; a hood with adjustable drawstring; and the Stone Island compass patch fastened to the left shoulder.
