Luxury sportswear tends not to aspire to performance. In fact, the simultaneous affirmation of a sportswear aesthetic and denial of performance is often how luxury brands have distinguished themselves from the rest of the field. This is what makes Stone Island such a welcome outlier. The Italian label has gained a reputation not just for employing performance, but for redefining it, with experimental research fabrics intended to enhance pieces in function and aesthetic. In their latest collection, the luxury sportswear experimentalists explore the unique textures of new and classic materials developed in-house, drawing from each a unique tonal range through a combination of their trademark dyeing processes.
One of the defining design principles of Italian label Stone Island’s approach is that a quest for innovation in simplicity must accompany their fabric research and development. It is the very high-performing materials for which they are known that allow them to distill pieces down to previously unseen foundational elements. By doing so, they unearth a kind of elegant simplicity.
The Stone Island Zip Pocket Overshirt is a perfect example of this approach in practice. This piece is constructed from Stone Island’s brushed cotton canvas: a textured, sturdy, and hardwearing fabric. This piece has been treated with the label’s trademark ‘Old’ effect, a garment dye process that results in pieces with a slightly worn and textured appearance.
Here in the label’s blue marine colorway, this piece has a unique feature in its two overlayed chest pockets. The first is a slit pocket with zip closure hidden under a flap. Beneath it, there is a patch pocket with flap and snap closure. Other features include elasticated cuffs with snap fastening, regular collar, and front two-way zip fastening. The piece is finished with the iconic Stone Island ‘Compass Rose’ patch attached to the left shoulder.
Made in Italy from 100% cotton.
