Undercover Toy Sweat UC1A4891-2 - Black

The Collection

The new collection from Undercover was the first to be designed from Jun Takahashi’s home, while under a nationwide lockdown in April 2020. Rather than imbue the collection with the panic of the catastrophic crisis in the world outside, Takahashi used his creative outlet as a way of imagining beyond it. The result is a collection that breathes with the continuity of previous Undercover seasons, with trademark prints taking aim at common objects of modern life and pop-cultural icons alike. Despite this continuity, for Takahashi, there is no returning to before the pandemic, stating in interview, “I cannot return to the life I had before. I must continue to push forward down the path that is unique for Undercover. Make a new life. Make new noise.”

This Garment

Though the Undercover name has become synonymous with high-concept collections, theatrical runway shows, and high-profile pop-culture collaborations, high-quality, everyday staples form just as important a part of their oeuvre. Here in the black colourway, the Undercover Toy Sweat shows Takahashi’s affinity for complicating the meaning of everyday objects associated with innocence via juxtaposition. The front of this crewneck sweatshirt is screen-printed with a large image of a teddy bear, with a less photo-realistic wingnut screw drawn in as if coming out of the bear’s head. The screen-printed text on the back offers little explanation: “Undercover Toy: toy without soul.” Cut from soft cotton sweatshirt jersey, this crewneck sweat also features a ribbed crew neckline, cuffs & bottom hem.

Made in Japan from 100% cotton.
