The first instalment of 2021 WTAPS sees the Japanese streetwear pioneers embark on this year filled with promise with a selection of accessories and classic apparel pieces. With their trademark blend of military, collegiate, sports, and workwear influences firmly in view, WTAPS posit a utilitarianism which we could all use more of right now.
WTAPS indisputably take most of their aesthetic cues from 20th-century military influences. But their collections reach far beyond merely recreating the military garb of yesteryear in a contemporary streetwear idiom. Though military-style utility remains their calling card, it’s how they incorporate disparate cues into their unifying aesthetic that makes the label what it is.
Sometimes this is apparent in juxtaposition, as with the WTAPS Rags Hooded Crewneck Sweat. This piece combines WTAPS’s military-inspired aesthetic with the avant-garde fashion gesture of deconstruction. Cut from pieces of brushed cotton sweatshirt jersey, this garment features asymmetrical construction, with the body composed of two pieces of fabric of different lengths. This asymmetry is accentuated by the fact that the overlapping created by this gesture obscures half of the WTAPS ‘spec’ motif screen-printed on the front and back.
Here in the beige colourway, this hooded sweat also features frayed hem detailing; a front kangaroo pocket; hood; two woven WTAPS labels above the kangaroo pocket and one at the side seam; and ribbed cuffs and asymmetrical bottom hem.
