Cult Japanese streetwear label WTAPS and California sneaker-maker Vans have a rich history of collaboration. This latest collection represents the brands’ 12th collaboration, offering new premium takes on classic Vans silhouettes.
WTAPS’s trademark military references—in this case, their GPS coordinates motif—finds a home on the side of the iconic Vans waffle sole, celebrating the distance between the physical locations of the two collaborators, and the now global spread of labels born from distinctly local conditions.
The now-iconic Vans Old Skool shoe was first introduced by the label in 1977 under the name ‘Style 36.’ It was the first Vans shoe to incorporate leather paneling and debuted the wavy sidestripe that has become a central visual motif of the Vans brand. With this collaboration, WTAPS recreate the iconic leisure shoe in line with their vision of premium Japanese streetwear.
The WTAPS x Vans OG Old Skool LX takes the features of the classic Old Skool shoe as its starting point: a three-piece upper, lace-up closure, padded tongue with woven Vans ‘Off the Wall’ label, leather lining at the padded collar, signature leather side stripe, the Vans woven flag label at the outer side, a rubber midsole with the Vans ‘Off the Wall’ logo on an embossed panel at the heel, and, of course, the iconic brown waffle outsole. Here in the White / Black colourway, the enhanced detailing of this WTAPS edition includes a premium suede upper, embroidered WTVUA branding at the heel, and the WTAPS GPS Coordinates across the midsole.
